Welcome Back!

Welcome to the 2nd Grade! I hope you’ve had a good summer and are excited about your second year in elementary school. My name is Phyllis Lopez, I have been teaching in international schools for the past 8 years. I am from Miami, Florida and have been living in Taiwan for the past 4 years. My degree is in language acquisition, and this year as a school we are placing lots of emphasis in literacy in all subjects which is very exciting.

This is a big year with big changes for us, all for the better. I’m looking forward to a positive and productive school year. The start of a new year holds the promise of discovery and learning as well as the prospect for personal growth in all areas. We will do a lot of reading, writing, and learning, and we will have fun doing it together!
Students are asked to bring the following supplies to school, please be aware that we will be placing materials together and creating a community supplies center, so all materials will be available for all the students in class in order to promote community awareness and responsibilities, with the exception of their personal pencil case and water bottles:
  • 1 pencil case with pencils and an eraser
  • 1 box of pencils
  • Crayons, markers, and watercolor pencils (Crayola or Faber Castell make great ones)
  • Scissors, glue, sharpeners
  • Tissue paper
  • A small personal student whiteboard
  • A personal towel/handkerchief and water bottle
  • Six (6) notebooks (one for each major subject and ECA) Preferably composition notebook, where they cannot tear the pages out. Costco has a great pack of 10 for $330 nt.
  • 3 or more English books to add to a class library (optional)
  • Healthy snack and water (no junk food, chocolate bars, or soft drinks)Headphones with working microphone for new technology programs
Please also be reminded that:
-Students are required to wear their full school uniform and black shoes to school Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as days which we will be having Mass celebrations. Wednesdays and Fridays students can wear PE uniforms, they may bring an extra PE shirt to change in to after PE class if they wish to.
-Students should come to school no later than 8:00 AM every day. Please be punctual.
-Students will be ready and waiting to go home at 3:30 PM every day.
Many important transitions take place in second grade so it’s very important that a good parent-teacher relationship is fostered. Your child’s Communication Book will go home every day, and it will need to be checked by a parent. Important notices about school events and personal notes regarding our class and your child will be sent home through the Communication Book or blog so it’s important that you check it every day. We will however be transitioning from communication books to google classroom, an online platform for easier access to daily homework.
I encourage you to use our class blog (mslopezdiskg.blogspot.com/) to keep up to date with pictures, special announcements and general information. This will be updated weekly and I will be using photos and quick summaries of the day to keep you informed. I will be tracking your child’s behavior through Class Dojo, an online program where they will earn points and recognition for positive behavior. I will be sending home information about this program and how it can help you stay up-to-date on how your child is performing behavior-wise while at school.

If you ever have any comments, questions, or concerns, please write to me in the Communication Book or via email. My email address is plopez@disk.kh.edu.tw. You can make an appointment with me through the book, email or through Ms. Lee in the Administration Office.
Again, welcome to Grade 2, I am very excited of sharing a world of exploration and discovery with your children!
Sincerely,
Phyllis Lopez
